HCOM260S

Throughout my HCOM class we continuously talk on the subject of politics and service learning. We speak on topics of the past present and what will happen in the future. I can see appeals to time and place heavily throughout my time in this class. As of now we are currently working on our service learning project. In which we choose a topic that is of importance towards usd and try to come up with critical thinking questions and topics in which we can make our topic of interest better. As of now all we have gotten to was the initial brainstorm of our topic and what qwe beralvie should be changed throughout it. Throughout the brainstorm it is important to keep in mind the appeals of time and place due to the fact that the topic of interest has been taking place for decades. My topic being how I care about immigration rights. Immigration has been affecting the united states since way back when. Hence the appeals of time as well as place. As now immigration laws are better than they were before. That is where appeals to time take place. The way immigrants were treated then is totally different from the way they are treated now. That being due to the place we are in now as a collective universe. As you can see almost everything can be applied towards time and place in which they are both so important. As I was writing, I came to a realization that Killingsworth wrote about appeals such as time and place because they are everywhere. The importance of them makes up the context for them as well. The way we live now is different from the way people lived back in the day. That is due to the times changing changing as well as the place we live is changing.

How my class in FYS applies to the book in “Appeals to Time and Body.” As  well as Rhetorical situation.         An assignment that I had to apply appeals to time and place was about learning how people etymologically lived  in the pre mid 1790 to 1965. By using the book and the map of rhetorical situation I was able to get a visual idea  of how it all relates rhetorical situations. In 1965 their was an act that concluded immigration and naturalization around Asia. It magnified throughout the war of southeast Asia.  While on the other side of the world, cuban were going through a cold war conflicts in the 60’s and 70’s. By gathering these two settings, I found a quote from the book that reveal its similarity. The quote states “ Rhetorical has been institutionalized from the start. It is always deeply contextual in its references to people, time, place, and action. The Difference has to with the degree of change from situation to situation and the consequences need for adjustments.”  The two applies to contextual event by specific time and place. Time and place are important as it plays a role of giving out information to the audience. Without a timing, it can contradict to what you are writing, especially if it involves rhetorical events such as history. This can also relate to constraints, specifically evidence. In general when writing about rhetorical situations in most cases, you are most likely to encounter on applying evidence to back up your statement being said.               In 1790 and 1820 the United states won the war of independence. In the words of Thomas paine he says “ The asylum for the persecuted lovers of civil and religious liberty from every past of Europe”.  Reading this I can see that Paine indeed applied to ethos, Pathos and logos, but more towards ethos and pathos. Ethos is the role of the author focuses on the attractiveness of the charaher and the authority as well as the author's inspiration. Pathos in the other hand involves the audience, exclusively the emotions of the audience.  The two important key terms are Inspiration, emotions and audience. Thomas words were in fact words based on how he expresses himself by emotions towards its audience. His speech gave a candor of words that were by his experiences. Pathos and ethos are ways to see and think of as appeals. So in this case Thomas saw appeals through the war of independence.             In Conclusion, rhetorical situation can really benefit your essay. Using the right context such as exigence, audience, constraints and many others you can receive a strong writing,  It can be eye catching by the way your writing is settled.I would suggest making a map or checklist to include the body of your essay. As well as making sure everything falls in nicely  to not confuse the audience while reading.

How appeals affect us in ethics

Learning about philosophy takes a lot of self awareness and in my HCOM-200 class which is about Critical thinking and ethics but to succeed you need to be mindful of these the five main Appeals of Time, Place, Body, Gender, Race. In this class you learn about seeing other perspectives within how others see things as well as how you see things for yourself and also learn other ways of thinking so you don't become close minded. One of our conversations that the class had was one about politics and the decisions our president is doing to push out anyone who is seen as non-american. We had to ask question to ourselves like "What makes an American?" "Does Race matter when determining who is American" "Can someone even become American" "Does our Political figure only can choose for us". When you get to read M. Jimmie Killingsworth book called Appeals In Modern Rhetoric you begin to see how his Appeals in Time, Place, Body, Gender, Race take affect when asking these questions because they relate to it in someone and forces you to critically think about what is right and what is wrong or if there isn't any side to choose from and thinking about all this should how complex the class can get as well as how this book is used in almost everything.

In every assignment in critical thinking and ethics it helps to always know what appeals go into every question that is asked. M. Jimmie Killingsworth says "Ethical Protocols emerge that taboo certain acts of self-serving and of group survival." What this means for me is that we often narrow our mind without even seeing what we are doing and the affect it has on other when we only think for ourselves. This is closely related to Body, Gender, and Race for the way we waited to self preserve an idea that we have and anything outside of if is wrong for some people. There is always a pro and a con when you look at it from an outside perspective without being bias to a certain side but seeing to understand this also helps you see how much Appeals to Time, Place, Body, Gender, Race has in our daily lives when we make decisions and thoughts.

In my chemistry class, we have opportunities to discuss the problems. We answer the problem as a group and explain the answer to the other groups by using an easy sentence. At that time, my group members make sure that they understand each other.  In many cases the answers are difficult and I often don't understand. My group members know that I am from a foreign country and will explain until I understand.

Is a grim future closer to today or is it farther?

In one of my classes called digital culture, where we look into the history of technological advancements. We just finished a book called “Brave New World” by Aldous Huexly, then the class had to make a movie about how brave new world compares to our world. When you’re talking about a couple of characteristics of a fictional world and then comparing it to our world and describe how it’s similar to it, it’s best to use appeals to time. Appeals to time include favoring the and new improve over the old, and I figure this would work with the project because we are comparing fictional and possible grim future of the world with our world today. And in some cases, we use appeals to the body when we describe the characters that help shape and explore the world. An appeal you want to understand if you want to remain good in the class is the appeals of time, mostly because the concept of the class is learning how technology has affected society over the years and in some activities we also compare other fictional worlds to our in terms of advancements in technology.

Appeal in Modern Rhetoric book; similarity to another class

Different Class Activity that is Similar with my CAD101B class
I will talk about my Art of Aztec Empire class. We had to do a presentation about an article we had to read. I got an article from a scholarly source which was accurate. From the article, which was about the Aztec education, it seemed very interesting so I decided to do my presentation from that topic. As I read, there were two different types of schools. One for the wealthy and the other for the poor. The wealthy school had both genders combined and learned together. The non-wealthy school had to have the genders separated. They were separated because they had to be tough different things according to their gender. For example, the girls had to learn about becoming young independent mothers, how to cook, house caretakers, and learn new dances and how to sing, which was a big part of their religion. The boys on the other hand, did more of the outside work. Since they saw that the older men did most of the hard labor work, they wanted to teach young boys on how to become independent and mature. What the boys were taught were skills to become warriors and tradesman, learn agriculture since they did most of the yard work, crafts, martial arts, and physical endurance. Knowing what these different genders learned, remind me from the book Appeal in Modern Rhetoric, chapters Appeals to Body and also Appeals to Gender. Since these two chapters are very similar and also explain similar points , this reminded me of how in the article that I read, how there are points where the genders are separated. In my opinion, I believe that gender and body are very similar because if you think about it, they both come from one thing, which is the body. Of course, everyone chooses to be who they want to be, but what the book identifies is that they are similar because they fall into the same category. Without a body, there is no gender and vice versa. I chose those two chapters because of how the children had to be separated and be thought different things because of their gender and also society. Going onto society, I chose the chapter appeals to body because whenever there is a for say, masculine body, some automatically think of a man. They way others criticize something because of their prospective, can be harming to others, and the book somehow shows that one should not do that. Once again, I am saying how body and gender are one because of the way the chapters show the similarities.

If you want to be successful in writing an effective Reflection about your mindful eating plan for your Eat, Love, Learn class you should take into consideration the appeals to time. In this assignment I had to read “Mindful Eating” by Jan Chozen Bays, which is about rediscovering a healthy and joyful relationship with food; while at the same time you participate in some of her exercises throughout the book. One of the exercises that was in the book was to create my own mindful eating plan and follow through with it for the next eight weeks. At the end of each week I had to write a reflection on how I did with my mindful eating plan and if there were any difficulties along the way or everything went smoothly. After reading Chapters Four, Five, and Six from “ Appeals in Modern Rhetoric” by Jimmie Killingsworth I realized that this exercise was a lot more complex than I had originally thought.
When you go on to write your reflections about your mindful eating plan it is important that you stay true to yourself and focus on the purpose of this exercise. As Killingsworth said, “ The appeal to oldness is in many ways merely the flipside of the appeal to newness.” Now a days things are easily labeled as “bad” or “good”, but the true problem is that most people do not know how the appeals to time work. Both of these terms have an effect on time because the labels that have been placed can change over time. An example of this is the recent trend of the Ketogenic diet, which is to consume a low amount of carbohydrates and intake lots of fats. As a result of this trend it has lead to people labeling Carbohydrates as “bad”. This is why when you write your reflections you shouldn’t let these complex appeals to time intervene with your mindful eating plan.
Another important appeal to always have in mind is the appeal to the body. As you get further into your mindful eating plan you should make connections to any difference you noticed after you began the eating plan; even if it's a small difference it still had an impact your body. An example of this can be feeling energized and being more productive, or as Killingsworth calls it " The Body Empowered." Identifying the appeals to the body will help you see the progress that you are making as well as some barriers that can be limiting your success. If you want to have a successful mindful eating plan you should always keep the appeals to time and body in mind because they both are connected and can have influences on your decision making when eating.

The project I completed was for my Finite math 115 course. For this project, we were required to do research on different types of loans and retirement plans that one can take. The purpose of this project was to not only inform the audience, which is students at California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB) but to also inform ourselves about the differences from different loan plans as well as retirement plans. I completed this project by taking bulleted notes on all the different loan and retirement plans. The main concept that I focused on while completing this project was the audience, due to the fact that I had to write in a way that both CSUMB students and I understood so that we wouldn’t get bored.

For the past month, I have done many assignments that have required a lot of writing. One, in particular, was an assignment for a world geography class, where we needed to write a paper about what we have learned from our readings. For this paper, I needed to write in a specific amount of words, and time. So this is technically it needs to be written in a genre. We had a choice to site text from the book and other resources to help us write and support our paper. There was also a limit of how many words we can use, and we needed to stay in the topic that was required. This assignment reminded of an old assignment from not too long ago, it was the last big assignment of Cad101B, where we took what we learn over the summer, and apply it to a topic we researched. Same things goes with the geography paper, took what we read in the book and apply it to the paper. It was from a different class and time but the assignment was had its complying moments and style just like the summer assignment.

Multicultural Health

There was an assignment that occurred in my FYS: Multicultural Health class, that caught my attention. This assignment made me realize how much the techniques that I learned in my CAD101B class really came in handy. The assignment was choosing on one question out of three. I chose the most interesting one which was about how I’d feel if I left everything and everyone behind to have a better life for myself. This is a tough writing to write about in my opinion. Having to think about having the power in this situation and how I can decide what type of actions I want to take. In this assignment, I will explain how I wouldn't want to leave my family behind, how I need to be there to help them, to stay with my siblings and take care of them and also that I wouldn't be ready at all to leave everyone behind. While doing the assignment, I thought about a way to answer this question. I thought about the rhetor in my writing, the audience and also my purpose. This related to the inquiry project from the summer, that really made me go deep into a discussion about a problem that someone has faced. This assignment was similar to my inquiry project because both of these situations are problems that people are facing and can’t do anything about it. This also made me think that I’m writing to the audience which leads me to how they think. The question from this assignment can change people's minds and how it’ll affect them. I wonder what your thoughts are on this question. Here is a picture of the assignment I had in my FYS class.

Show what you want to tell the proper way

Have you ever wanted to know how to apply different types of genre in writing? Showing off different types of genre is often quite simple if you want to know what style you want to present your work in. Knowing what style you need to write things in will help create a better present your work with a right feel. What I'm trying to focus towards is in types of genre is mainly professional writing.

bainbridgeyogahouse

A keep importance when it comes to Genre is knowing what your purpose when your writing while also keeping the audience in mind. Genre can be applied in many of these an example I will be using to help explain is an example of one of my work that I used from another class. In my assignment I was tasked to write an essay about anything I wanted as long as it was in dialog which dialog look sound and also looks like people talking to each other which looks more natural. Comparing dialog to other more common types of writing you can notice how different it is with common forms of writing like in essays which are presented in a to tell which keeps these very plain and doesn't help bring out a story. With dialog you would want to focus and showing a story by putting your audience in a certain perspective to get them feeling a story by using a lot of sentences as if you were there telling in quotes which normally can be used if your informing people. Genre are for designing your story to help present your work to others which lot of genres are out there for different purposes which have their own styles and formats.

Important notes when you start dealing with genre is knowing what format to use for what you are writing to and your purpose. The purpose is often the key importance because oftentimes purpose helps and influences to what you want to write about.  Another important to also keep track of is the audience and what to be expected from your writing and what you want them to understand for your.

Class: FYS

Assignment: I did a research project on dorm life for my FYS class. Our assignment was to write about a  type of cultural of people based on your choice.

Purpose: I used perspective, audience, as well as purpose

How it relates:  While I had to write about the culture of dorm life I had to observe people as well as interview people, I knew I had to get a perspective on how they see their life now that they live on campus instead at home. I had to use audience, not just any but specifically CSUMB students living in the dorms, Any college/university could have different types of audience who have their own way of living on campus, which is why I had to specifically choose CSUMB. Using purpose was a way to see how CSUMB students see the way of dorm life by different ethnicity, cultural beliefs, religion and so on. By using audience as my guide to my research paper I was able to observe the type of diversity in this school and was able to write about diveirity in CSUMB as well, thus I was able to identify their ethnicity and more importantly their culture beliefs.  Perspective was also another guide to see other people view and got a more of an open look of how they see the world now. I do think however that perspective and audience do tie in together as they both have a connection. Audience relates to perspective because the audience all have different perspective about certain topics, thus I was able to get different opinions and information on my essay for FYS. All this can connect with primary research as I myself also did interview questions to get information from students. Previously I done another blog post about Social anxiety and found statistics information and popular scholarly source. Knowing that I had to get more in depth information about my project, I knew I had to interview people to get their point of view. By doing this it relates to my FYS project. Both had to connect to prescriptive as well as audience.  I do encourage to interview people if it is part of your assignment to get a strong opinion on different people, the more you have the more your essay will have. Using a rhetorical concept tracker can be useful as it is a way to keep your ideas organized.

Multicultural Health

One of the classes I am taking throughout my freshman year is a mandatory first year seminar.  The class I chose being called multicultural health. In this class we always speak on issues relating to either ourselves or the world. In my opinion the work we do in this class is always interesting and intriguing. The most recent task assigned to me was a group project with three other people in my class. We were assigned a rubric and set of questions to respond to. The format of the presentation was to be a google slides. Throughout the project me and my group spoke about each question and gave our own input. As we began to speak we realized some of us have things in common from our culture and social lives as well. Something we would not have figured out if it weren't from this project. We also found out that we have different views when it comes to religion and such. That is where perspective comes in because we each had our own about religion and gave reasons why we do or don't have one. As for rhetor we each had to mix in our own thoughts into one paragraph and prevent it towards the class in a proper way. Constraints on genre as well as reading skills can be shown when we each spoke on our culture. For example our cultures were different and each individual has their own. Therefore I believe culture can be seen as a constraints on genre in a way. When I make my final draft I will speak on this more and what I mean but for now I leave it at that. Reading skills are shown during the process of writing our responses down, incorporating everyone into a well written and proper paragraph.

The concepts I applied here were audience and purpose. Informing them about unsubsidized loans and using citations to further explain my knowledge.(click image for better quality)
The project that I did for my Finite Mathematics course was informing the graduating students of California State University, Monterey Bay(CSUMB) about the different types of loans and retirement plan options. I did this by writing an essay that was composed with descriptive information about loans and retirement plans; using sources to further extend the field of knowledge and comprehension. The main concepts that I focused on while writing this essay was purpose and exigence. Since the audience was a given, my goal was to successfully get my point across to the reader. Thus, writing about two different loans and retirement plans in dep th would be better. The reason for this is because I’m focusing on my purpose of informing my audience, which can have little to no knowledge on retirement plans or loan options. Comparing two different options can give the audience a new perspective, as well as influencing one of their future choices.
