Readers and Writers Alike

The activity that stood out to me the most was the concept tracker. For one it was completely new to me. I knew nothing about it and i've never heard about before. It was interesting learning about all the different key concepts and what they actually mean. What also stood out to me was after reading through whatever text was assigned to us and picking a quote that best matches the key concept we opened our minds up to understand that concept on another level. Throughout the class we've spent a lot of time reading and dissecting the text given to us. The reason for the concept tracker standing out is because from all the activities completed in class we always end back at the concept tracker. The reading strategies that come to mind being contextualization. One person can only understand what is inside their own mind and their own mind alone. Context gives out key ideas and main concepts in either writing or movies. It's the most important part of the text. It is what allows us to understand the text and connect with it.

As we keep making additions to our concept tracker only one reading really stands alone from the rest. That one being Mike Palmquist and how he talks about readers and writers. The reading goes into depth on different sub topics from “Considering your Reader” to “What is the Writer's Purpose”. It speaks about why people write and why people read. Mike writes about the types of things that influence them or motivate them. This reading was really interesting and I really enjoyed dissecting it in class. The rhetorical concept that stood out to me was purpose. The reason being because the definition given to us was “is an opinion on communication”. Everyone has their own opinions on anything so imagine the different possibilities for purpose. Opinions come from people's minds. Everyone thinks differently purpose is going to be uniquely molded to their minds. It may not make sense to others but to that person it could make perfect sense.

Great! You're finally off to college and ready to begin the next step in your life. While in college one thing that you're gonna get used to is writing essays. In order to compose a proper essay, you have to have a good understanding of the rhetorical concepts needed for the essay. There are plenty of concepts that can be used, but the two most important are audience and purpose.

Having an understanding of both of these will make it easier for the author to know what to write about and to whom he/she is writing to. Also, having a clear idea of what it is you're trying to accomplish by composing your essay will make it a lot easier to decide what information you want. Before thinking about purpose it's important to already have your audience in mind. This is important because certain audiences have specific interests, and if you're writing to the wrong audience the purpose of your essay can be meaningless. Once you have your audience, it's time to decide whether your paper is going to be expository, narrative, or descriptive. Having this knowledge will benefit you through out your entire college experience and make writing essays a whole lot easier.

This is an excerpt from an informal project called concept tracker. Gives a better understanding of rhetorical concepts such as purpose.

different perspective

Have you ever wonder when reading a reading a paper, you want to know what’s the author view to their.  It’s a good idea to keep in mind about perspective.

Having an idea about perspective can help you get an idea of what point the author is trying to make.  Everyone is different, their ideas, beliefs, views, and the author is giving their own opinion about whatever they’re writing about. Understanding the author perspective on their paper, can help you understand the authors opinion.

In some cases the author adds other people perspective to their own work.

For example, in writing waves, Luna Mercenit describes how the athletes felt when the track and field was removed and how it effected their daily routine.  Luna adds the opinions of the track removal, and it gives the reader a little more of a understanding of the topic the author is addressing.

When writing, always remember that it comes down to matter of perspective between your opinions you address, and your reader. Everyone had a different view about anything, so does the reader.
Have you ever wrote any essays that incorporate rhetorical concept? Or maybe finding a purpose for your audience to read your writing? While attending an early start program in reading and writing, I worked on different types of assignments and learning it’s purpose. Going to class, I learned a bit on how I can upgrade my essay rather than writing a basic essay like you would in high school. An activity that got my interest in class is when we worked with a group of pairs to figure out what happened in “ Boyd Margaret “ Murder (rhetorically speaking!)” by using a certain language from a news reporter , lawyer , and an investigator. I saw how each and every person had their own context to speak to the audience. They used a type of jargon to be able to communicate with the rest from the people. Talking as a lawyer news reporter etc.  is important to have a type of language to be able to understand one another. Reading and understanding jargon can be helpful, so you can understand how they communicate with one another. It can also be helpful when your given an essay to write about a specific type of topic, maybe you're trying to capture an audience who do mechanic or perhaps the medical field. ect. You want to have a language where the audience can understand your writing, to be able for them to comprehend and for them to say “ oh yes, this did have a purpose when I read it. I understand his/her way of writing.” So when I was given this assignment, I did find it helpful and will utilize this type of strategy of thinking when im given an essay that requires writing in jamrog.

Another assignment that we worked on was reading Mercenti, Luna “CSUMB Issue For Track Athletics”. It was an article and activity that I was able to add on my opinion based on what she agreed on. When I had to write an essay about this I used a map argument to be able to get more in depth about what was I going to mention in the article. A rhetorical concept that occurred to me while working on the assignment about athletics track was by identifying text, author, audience, purpose and setting. In this case, I can see that the text was about athletes losing their track field.  The author Mercenti Luna. The audience is the students and falculity of CSUMB. And the purpose was bringing awareness to the problem and how it’s affecting athletes. Lastly the setting was in CSUMB track to MPC track field. Finding ways to add purpose on a reflecting essay can help get a more strong solid essay. Rhetorical concept can be one of the many ways to add on your essay. I found that writing in a way that has purpose, gave the essay more understanding and value to it. We also want to focus on the audience’s attention, a good way to grab their attention is to first include a question they might not be too familiar with. It will grab their attention and would want to keep reading to find out. Down below is an example image of map argument I used for writing my essay.

Out of all of the assignments I did throughout my summer, I found Luna Mercenti the most effective when writing. I say this because the assignment we were given was to write an essay about it by using purpose and of course summarize it. Doing this helped developed skills of purpose and being able to write in order. I think it can be the most useful assignment to do when improving your writing essays. Using perspective and other methods such as rhetorical concepts and purpose can really enhance your essay. The more practice you get, the easier it will become to write. You can search up ways to use rhetorical concept on Google or you can search on CSUMB library website. You can get a perspective from what the students learned about it and so you can see their point of view from learning about rhetorical concept. Down below is a copy of my rhetorical concept I did in class.

Always keep in mind that your opinion can sometimes not be the same as the readers , moreover it can lead to disagreement. My suggestion is to keep an open mind set to all sorts of opinions so you can have a more pleasing essay to your audience. Another good way to keep your essay running smoothly is to not be monotonous with your essay. Add on your essay with new fresh sentences. You can take notes about what your reading so later on you can have a better understanding on what the author is talking about. The more you know the more detailed your essay will become. To be able to write an essay you should have context, purpose and so on. These are one of the many strategies I use to write an essay of any kind.

Question about audience?

Are you trying to write to someone with a different perspective than you?
There are many different types of audiences. Writing toward an audience is pretty hard. Since there are different types of audiences, you need to identify which one you are writing too. For example, identify if they are your friends, a manager, your family, or professor, and choose what tone and how you will communicate with them. Writing about a topic that grabs the readers attention can be helpful with many things. In my case, I had to write as if I was writing to an audience. I didn't know what type, so I chose to write as if I knew my professor was going to read it. I knew it had to be correct and in a professional way. If you are having trouble with trying to figure out in what way you should communicate to your audience, looking into the rhetorical concepts would be very helpful for some of us.

A rhetorical concept is a concept that helps us writers understand our writing better. One of our assignments in class was to choose what rhetorical concept inspired us to write about our informal activity? Our informal activity was based on what issue we have dealt with at CSU Monterey Bay, that also affects others. I wrote this as if I was writing to someone. On the concept tracker, there are 8 concepts. The first being Perspective, then Audience, Rhetorical Situations, Exigence, Purpose, Context, Genre, and Rhetor. All of these concepts show us different types of ways we can show expressions in communication. The one that caught my eye was the Audience concept. Make the concept you choose relatable with what you wrote about. Express what you are putting out there for the readers, and explain how people's feelings can affect them in any way. Also, show how others can be affected differently depending on their perspectives. Audience is basically people in communication. You want the audience to understand what you are trying to convey, so in that case, I added a picture of the Audience concept in this article. On the last two rows, are my understanding on audience. You can see how I give out my understanding, which I believe can help others understand it as well. Hopefully you can see how I tried to explain the Audience concept in my own way, which hopefully also answered any of your questions related to Audience.

Genre Analysis

This image is a comic strip about genre analysis.
Calvin, the little guy in the comic strip, tells Hobbes, the other charcter in the comic strip, the rules about war. He gets these rules by listening to stories that others tell him about war. Which is why this is a genre analysis. A genre analysis is when someone talks about a topic to somebody else, in this case war is the genre and Calvin analys it by telling Hobbes the rules about war.
Genre analysis is important for one to know how to do because when it comes to doing one, there are many steps you need to consider taking to properly complete one.
This is image is my introduction to a genre analysis.
An assignment that stood out to me the most, has to be the genre analysis I did on “CSUMB Issues for Track Athletes” by Luna Mercenit. It stood out to me the most because I had never done one of these in the past. I was completely lost at the beginning, I didn’t know how to begin. I just kept re-reading the article, up until I went back to my notes I had taken the class before and re-read them to myself. The note taking skills that I used were the following; I first read the article completely, after reading the article I then re-read it but this time I wrote down the key points about it, I then made annotations on the article so that I could reflect on them. After going back to my annotations everything was so much easier, I finally understood that we had to talk about the language, audience, purpose, and the type of information that Luna Mercenit uses throughout her article.

The note taking skills that I used were the following, I first read the article completely, after doing this I then re-read it again but this time I annotated Luna Mercenit's article to get a better understanding of her purpose. Once I was done reading and taking notes on her article, I then went on to putting my annotations together and writing a rough draft. By doing so I was able free write the genre analysis but at the same time also being able to go back and fix my errors so that I could turn that rough draft into a final draft.

A rhetorical concept that occurred to me while doing the assignment was perspective, this is because by reading the article, I was able to learn more about how the CSUMB track athletes felt on not having their own track and field to practice and compete on. Purpose was another rhetorical concept that occurred to me while doing the assignment. Purpose occurred to me because by reading the article, I was not only able to understand the purpose for why Luna Mercenit chose to write about this topic, but also what she wanted her readers to do with it.

Another Way of Learning

If you ever wanted to know and understand what you were reading so you aren't lost? Rhetorical concept tracker maybe be something you might be interested if you want to know what your reading and not just skim through it. This tool can be useful almost anything thing you read if you want to dive deeper and go more into it.

Drawing of three two-sided arrows in the shape of a pyramid. Where points meet on top, "Purpose"; bottom left, "Author"; bottom right, "Audience." "Message" is in the middle.

The rhetorical concept tracker can be used in other ways to help understand and analyze text. If you were given a new body of writing with its own type of writing rhetorical concept tracker can be used in this situation in different ways. One of the ways that this can be used is reading a research article  about an issue breaking down that article into parts and starting to under each portion to see why it was written and to understand what the author is writing each part for. This is so you can understand what your reading and to know why people are communicating this information to you to understand. Rhetorical concept tracker is great way to help understand text in parts and this can be transferred in almost anything that you read since it allows you to dive deeper into the authors purpose.

[The green is used to help break down information red are examples of  how they were done]

I learned about Rhetorical concept tracker during one of my college courses. This was by the was one of my favorite assignments given to me since it allowed me to better understand newer and harder information that I was experiencing for the first time. The Rhetorical concept tracker helped me analyze text and quotes that before I didn't think it would be useful. I was able to continue to use the concept tracker through my other assignments in college to gather information from a writing piece and understand what the author is telling me and how this is useful to me. This is by far a better way of analyzing text since it makes you think about the information your reading to always look at to this how is useful for you as well as why its useful.

Genre Analysis: My experience

This is a screenshot of a paragraph from my Genre Analysis Essay. This is a sample of my writing after analyzing others work to help my writing be more successful.

Genre Analysis. Genre means a form of communicating as in (twitter, essay, presentation, etc) and analysis means examining to understand, genre analysis is examining a form of communication. Genre Analysis is done by everybody in their daily life, another way to see genre analysis is by picturing a situation then looking into all the factors that lead up to the final ending. Genre Analysis in a way is the opposite of assuming, it is knowing all the important details before saying something about what is going on.
For the genre analysis assignment we read a Luna Mercenit's article called “CSUMB Issues for Track Athletes” which talked about how track athletes were treated and how their life changed by removing the track and field facilities on CSUMB campus.  Our assignment was to analyze Mercenit's arguments to truly understand how to write a very good argumentative essay and be able to apply it to an argumentative essay. Some strategies that were used to help us understand the text was reading the article as much as we can to truly understand what the author was trying to say.  We were talking about her strategies and what she used in her writing that we learned from her. Another thing that helped was that a lot of discussions were made about the article in class. This helped us look at her writing in different perspectives and made us break it down even further. There was a chance to listen to everybody's ideas which helped with the genre analysis. It was easy to learn from Mercenit's writing and able to apply in our essays, which not only makes you a better reader but also an even better writer.  A rhetorical concept that occurred was perspective and purposes. Luna had a purpose and that was to let as many people the way that CSUMB is treating their athletes. Luna was speaking to her audience in a very good manner, she was good at explaining everything she said which can teach a lot about argumentative essays but also keeping the audience involved. She also included a lot of detail on her opinions with explanations which lead her to her understandings. The assignment was very good practice because it taught me how to write more professionally  by looking really into what it takes to write a good argumentative essay.

I want to talk about the purpose. As everyone know, purpose is really important for a research essay, because you need to get a clear purpose for your essay before you begin writing. And purpose is useful to help you to find some information or useful essay. First, I want to talk about how to know a writer's purpose.

As this form, purpose is the reason for communication, and you can think it is the reason why this writer want to finish this essay. These two example from my reading, and they are two writer' thinking about purpose. These thinkings are same as me. We all believe purpose is important for writing. If you want to know a writer's purpose, you need to find some main idea sentences. They can show you the writer's purpose really clear, because key sentences always include the main idea for an essay. When you know the main idea of an essay, you can find the purpose of this essay really easy. So, going to find some key sentences when you want to know the writer's purpose.

Next,  I want to talk about how to use the purpose. When you know how to find a writer's purpose, you can use this skill to help you to find some helpful information. When you want to find some essay to support you essay, you will get a lot of essay that you can choose. How to know which is helpful to you? Purpose! You can use writer's purpose to find. If the writer's purpose is similar as your purpose or it has a link between your purpose and this writer's purpose, maybe this essay is useful to you.

Finally, I will show an example from my experience about my research essay. My purpose is research about 'Should there be a course for students of this type of major on how to describe their ideas to non-professionals'. I choose this topic because I met a lot of trouble about this problem. I find an essay from Robyn Woodward-Kron named 'More than just jargon--the nature and role of specialist language in learning disciplinary knowledge'. The purpose of this essay is confirming the importance of technical terms. It have some links for my purpose, because I need to confirm the importance of technical terms, too. It can help me to confirm this kind of class is helpful for students from some special major who meet the same trouble with me. So, I think this essay is useful for me, because it can support my purpose. I think use this way to find some useful essay and informations is really good.
